Romano Prodi to meet Mohammad Khatami in Tehran

IRNA - Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi is to visit Tehran to take part in Conference on Dialogue Among Cultures and Civilizations.

According to IRNA, Prodi is to arrive in Tehran on Sunday to participate at the event which will be attended by the other members of the Madrid Club.

The conference has been sponsored by Baran Foundation.

Meanwhile, ANSA news agency said that Prodi will stay in Tehran for several days and then will leave for Yazd, former President Mohammad Khatami's hometown, to attend a ceremony.

Prodi was the first European country's top-ranking official who visited Iran in 1998 after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

In 1998, Khatami was Iran's president.

Madrid Club is an independent organization which has some 70 members comprising former presidents including Bill Clinton and Michael Gorbachev.

The entity seeks to strengthen democracy in the world using the experience of its members.
